Environment & Technology

The new plant, Enecogen, will reduce emissions into the environment.

The Enecogen power plant, with a plant efficiency of 59%, will have a substantial lower carbon dioxide emission than a coal fired power station and will also be one of the most efficient gas-fired plants.
Combined with the featured DeNOx installation Enecogen will be the most environmentally friendly and cleanest power plant recently built commercially in Europe.

Currently the Netherlands has a relatively out-of-date and inefficient production park.  This results in high electricity prices and high CO2 emissions. The new plant, Enecogen, will reduce emissions into the environment through, amongst others:

  • Enecogen plantMaking use of the latest techniques
  • A high energy efficiency, resulting in low CO2 emissions
  • Low noise levels
  • Low NOx emissions
  • Collaboration with the surrounding industries, e.g. future integration with Liongas' LNG terminal
  • No fine particles emissions
  • In addition, natural gas is a relatively clean fuel in comparison to, e.g., coal

Naturally Enecogen meets all the legal requirements for electricity plants.

Combined Cycle Gas Turbine

The Enecogen plant will be a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station, currently the most efficient form of large power generation with an efficiency of 59%. Especially when compared to the best performing coal-fired power stations, which have an efficiency of around 45%.

Power produced in this CCGT type of power plant is done in two stages which are designed to maximise operational efficiency and minimise emissions:

Stage 1 - Gas turbine

At the start of the power generation process, gas is burnt to power gas turbines that rotate at high speed. This rotation is used to drive an electric generator that produces electricity supply, which is fed into the national grid of Tennet.

Stage 2 - Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG)

In the second stage, heat contained in the gas turbine exhaust is fed back into the process via a closed-loop water system (similar in principle to the way in which a car's water system captures engine heat which can then be used by the vehicle's heater). The hot gases produced as a result of combustion in the turbines are captured by a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), which produces steam that powers a steam turbine capturing greater efficiency from the process. This turbine is also linked to an electric generator, producing additional power supplies.
This design feature gives rise to the term "combined cycle" as this secondary heat capture process, coupled with the use of efficient gas turbines in Stage 1, results in energy efficiencies of 59%.

DeNOx installation

The Enecogen power plant will be provided with a DeNOx installation. This Selective Catalytic Reduction installation (SCR) will reduce the NOx emissions significantly compared to without SCR. This technology is already applied by gas fired power plants in the United States. In the DeNOx installation the emission gasses containing nitrogen oxide (NOx) will be transformed into nitrogen and water, which will evaporate via the stack.

The Enecogen plant technology

The Enecogen power plant project consists of two trains of the SCC5-4000F 1 S combined cycle power plant, which through its modular concept allows easy adaptation to specific needs and site requirements, high operational flexibility, short start up times and high ramp rates.

Siemens Energy will build the power plant as a turnkey project and supply the main components comprising for each train one SGT5-4000F gas turbine, one SST5-5000 steam turbine and one hydrogen-cooled generator, the entire mechanical equipment, and the electrical and I&C systems. All three main components are arranged on a single shaft. A synchronous self-shifting (SSS) clutch is installed between the generator and steam turbine. This provides high operating flexibility and reliability.

Environmentally friendly

With low NOx emissions and a plant efficiency of 59% the two gas-fired plants will be the most environmentally friendly recently built commercially in Europe.
